The 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence

As we mark the 250th anniversary of the grand experiment in democratic self‑government on the North American continent, we celebrate a future in which the spirit of the Declaration of Independence and a renewed commitment to the principles of the United States Constitution remains a sacred trust. The central point of the Declaration of Independence is embodied in the sentence, “[w]e hold these truths to be self‑evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The Preamble of the United States Constitution states, “[w]e the People of the United States, in Order to forma a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” It is the sole business of all levels of government in the United States to secure those “unalienable Rights” including justice, domestic tranquility, and promotion of the general welfare for EVERY HUMAN BEING within the jurisdiction of the United States of America.
